About Power BI Map Shaper

Welcome to the free Power BI Map Shaper - your easy-to-use tool for creating custom shape maps tailored to your reporting needs.

What is this tool?

Power BI’s Shape Map visual lets you display data geographically using custom maps. While Power BI includes built-in maps, sometimes you need more control - for example, focusing only on specific countries, regions, or custom boundaries.

Our tool allows you to:

  • Select from multiple base maps (e.g., world, Europe, US, China).
  • Interactively choose the countries or regions you want by clicking on the map or selecting from the table.
  • Download your customized map data as a ZIP file containing both TopoJSON and GeoJSON formats.

These files are ready to import into Power BI’s Shape Map visual or Azure Maps, enabling you to visualize data on exactly the areas you care about.

How to use the tool

  1. Choose a base map from the available options.
  2. Select regions or countries by clicking on the map or checking the boxes in the list.
  3. Download the map data as a ZIP file containing TopoJSON and GeoJSON files.
  4. Import the TopoJSON file into Power BI’s Shape Map visual:
    • Enable Shape Map in Power BI Desktop under File > Options > Preview Features.
    • Add the Shape Map visual to your report.
    • Upload your custom TopoJSON file.
  5. Bind your data to the map regions by matching your data’s location keys with the map’s region IDs.
  6. Customize colors and formatting within Power BI to highlight your data insights.

Why use custom shape maps?

  • Visualize data at the exact geographic granularity you need.
  • Highlight specific regions without clutter from irrelevant areas.
  • Create maps for unique geographies like sales territories, service areas, or custom zones.
  • Enhance your reports with compelling, interactive geographic visuals.
